Innoptus Solar Team Conquers America and Wins the 2026 American Solar Challenge
The Innoptus Solar Team has added a new chapter to its impressive racing history by winning the 2026 Electrek American Solar Challenge. Before the official road race began, teams first competed in a three-day qualifying event at Brainerd International Raceway, where the objective was to complete as many laps as possible. After finishing third in the qualifying competition, the KU Leuven engineering students embarked on an eight-day journey across the United States and ultimately became the first European team ever to win the American Solar Challenge.
Unlike traditional races, the American Solar Challenge is not simply about reaching the finish line first. Teams travel from checkpoint to checkpoint across the country and can complete additional loops along the route to accumulate official mileage. At the end of the event, the team that has covered the highest number of official miles is declared the winner. From the opening stages, the Infinite Apollo demonstrated its competitiveness. The Belgian team quickly moved into second place and remained within striking distance of race leader Delft while carefully balancing speed, energy consumption and route strategy.
The decisive moment arrived on day five. After several days of relentless pressure on the leaders, Innoptus Solar Team took control of the overall classification. Rather than relying on risky tactics, the team focused on consistency, reliability and efficient energy management. Their disciplined approach paid off as they steadily increased their advantage while maintaining outstanding vehicle performance under challenging conditions.
Taking the lead was only half the battle. During the final stages, including long stretches of the legendary Route 66, the Belgian students had to defend their position while continuing to maximise their official mileage. Strategic decisions and strong execution allowed them to maintain control of the race and extend their lead over their closest rivals.
When the team arrived in Amarillo, Texas, they secured victory not simply by crossing the finish line, but by having accumulated the highest number of official miles throughout the entire competition. The achievement marks a historic first for the team and adds North America to a list of victories that already includes Australia, Europe, South Africa and Chile. Once again, Innoptus Solar Team demonstrated that innovation, teamwork and engineering excellence can compete with the very best in the world.
